Common Carrier Oils Used In CBD Tinctures

Most CBD tinctures consist of CBD dissolved in carrier oil. This carrier oil keeps the CBD suspended and dilutes the CBD somewhat so that it is easier for the user to get their desired dose. Some people don't really care what oil is used as the carrier in their CBD tincture. However, if you are allergic to certain oils or you find that your body absorbs CBD better when it's suspended in certain oils, then you might care about this quite a lot. The following are the most common carrier oils you'll see used to make CBD tinctures.

MCT Oil

This is by far the most common carrier oil with most of the larger and better-known CBD companies using it. MCT stands for "medium-chain triglycerides," which are derived from either coconut oil, palm kernel oil, or some of both. Sometimes the tincture label will tell you what oil the CCT is derived from, and other times it will not. MCT oil is an excellent carrier oil for CBD because MCTs are easily digested and broken down in your body. This leads to faster absorption of CBD. MCT oil is light and thin, and it has almost no flavor. Its only downside is that it can cause upset stomachs and gas for some people.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil, as the name suggests, is oil pressed from hemp seeds. This is different from pure CBD oil, which is pressed from hemp flowers. Hemp seed oil is often used as a carrier oil for CBD tinctures because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory. So, if you are taking CBD for its anti-inflammatory benefits, you may want to look for one made with hemp seed oil. This oil does have a bit of a hemp flavor and costs more than MCT oil, but it works well for those whose stomachs don't tolerate MCT oil.

Olive Oil

CBD tinctures made with olive oil are not overly common, but they have their place. Olive oil has longer-chain fatty acids, so it takes longer to absorb than other carrier oils. It's also thicker than other carrier oils. However, it is high in antioxidants and beneficial nutrients, and it is well tolerated by those with sensitivities to other oils. Olive oil is also abundant and relatively affordable, which means olive oil-based CBD tinctures tend to be affordable.

The next time you buy CBD tincture, check what carrier oil it contains. Chances are, it's one of these three.
